The films right for many popular video games are getting snatched up by Hollywood and fast-tracked. Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Metal Gear Solid, and even Call of Duty all have potential film adaptations in the making. But should we be scared?
For every descent video game film adaptation there is 10 putrid films. Here is a list of five of the worst video game movies that were released with in the last decade.
5. Dead or Alive
Action director Corey Yuen brings Tecmo's fighting franchise to the big screen featuring Devon Aoki, Sarah Carter, Jaime Pressly, Holly Valance and yes Eric Roberts. The game has one of the most basic plots ever so it is not like the director ruined the source material. It's just that was this really worth making into a film adaptation? The game has always been about its cool fights and beautiful graphics. It is so sad to see such an awesome character like Ryu Hayabusa make his film debut in this C-movie. He deserved at least a B-movie like "Ninja Assassin." The movie is like the illegitimate child of "Enter the Dragon" and "Charlie's Angels."
4. Bloodrayne
BloodRayne the video game had a cool premise, mix Nazis with the occult and give gamer's a female vampire protagonist. The titled character Rayne was a Dhampir, which is the child of a vampire and a human. Dhampir powers are similar to those of vampires, but without the usual weaknesses. They are also adept at hunting other vampire. The storyline could have worked. Think Wesley Snipes' "Blade" franchise. But instead director Uwe Boll crafted an absurd campy movie with multiple montages of horseback riding. This movie should have premiered on the SyFy channel. Poor Ben Kingsley.
3. Doom
Doom's plot is already kind of far-fetched. The portal to hell opening on the planet of Mars and a lone space marine battling through the hordes to prevent a potential invasion of earth. The film has some kind of virus thing going on and a mutated Dwayne Johnson. The lighting is just terrible and the action is bland, boring and dull. It's better to just turn on the original video game and blast through hordes of demons.
2. Max Payne
The Max Payne video game series features a gritty neo-noir style and uses graphic novel panels to narrate the game, as it draws inspiration from hard-boiled detective novels. The film is a strange action movie with CGI flying Valkyrie. Why this movie is so high on the list is because it was the easiest game to translate to film in history. I mean the games are inspired by neo-noir. If only Christopher Nolan could have made the movie, we may have had the greatest video game adaptation in history.
1. Alone in The Dark
Alone in The Dark is a critically acclaimed survival horror game, but the film adaptation is truly gives us nightmares. Not because of the evil demons, but because of the horrible special effects, creature designs, script and campy acting. The first game's was about Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood trapped inside of a haunted mansion and facing the supernatural. The movie had worm monsters, lost tribes, orphan children, and the military. It was so convoluted and it is an Uwe Boll film.
