WWE Monday Night Raw has created a new title with the WWE Universal Title with the champion to be determined at SummerSlam taking place next month.
Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns were initially seen as the ones likely to vie for the title until Raw commissioner Stephanie McMahon and general manager Mick Foley revealed a flurry of matches. Most notable was the Fatal Four-Way match involving Rusev, Cesar, Kevin Owens and a debuting Finn Balor.
The former NXT champion came out victorious but had to buck serious odds against Reigns. Reigns also battled three other stars in a separate match (Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho and Sheamus).
Finn Balor’s Time
Despite making his maiden debut, Balor found himself being catapulted to the top. He found a way to waylay Reigns and such set the stage for an interesting clash with Rollins for the Universal title on Aug. 21, WWE.com reported.
The SummerSlam main event marks a change in the traditional cards. Reigns takes a backseat for now with Balor getting a big opportunity to prove he can do better. The next couple of weeks should see a build for the match with Seth Rollins likely anchoring it.
Heel turn rumors yet again
With the Rollins-Balor match set, the question now is what lies ahead for Reigns? Is this the start of the end? Or will it be the heel transformation that everyone is waiting for?
Reigns is rooting for Balor and remains positive since he believes he is the first one in line to get a crack at the WWE Universal title. But until that happens, who will Reigns be paired up against?
A new feud could ensue in the coming weeks or see Reigns lurking in the shadows quietly as he psyches out both Rollins and Balor. Despite the fact Reigns is pushing for Balor, it could be a plan which many are tying up to a heel turn, Daily DDT reported.
The formal revelation could happens at SummerSlam with Reigns feuding with Balor. It is seen by many as the only way for the “Big Dog” to regroup with his current run getting nothing more than boos and jeers.
