Grand Theft Auto 3 Available on the PlayStation Network Tomorrow

The lightning rod that helped re-ignite controversy surrounding video games, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 3, will be available for download on the PlayStation Network tomorrow, according to PlayStation.blog.

When it was released in 2001, GTA 3 was the game that everyone was talking about. By offering one of the first, and most expansive open world environments for the time, GTA 3 helped set a standard that games are still held to today. Unfortunately, it earned an infamous reputation for violence when the mainstream media put it on a pedestal as a something to be vilified when it gave players the option to act as they like.

If you really wanted, you could play the game without getting hookers, letting pedestrians safely cross the street, or not murdering policeman. But when the game gives you the option, why not run with it? After all, something or someone has to push the envelope for us to know where the proverbial line is.

Sony actually intended to release Rockstar's 2001 classic in July this past summer, but hit a snag after some last minute legal issues getting clearance for the soundtrack.

Considering the game's legacy, it's a steal at $10 (this was the price announced in July, a recent price hasn't been set yet), but keep in mind that this is an exact port. No HD upgrade, no new content, no trophies. Those willing to hunt down every last hidden package and complete every jump will be doing so purely for themselves, not to extend their trophy list.
