Apple announced that the new iPhone 5 has sold over 5 million in the first three days since its release. These sales numbers surpass the 4 million mark that was set by the iPhone 4S, however the iPhone 5 launched in more markets.
"Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," says Apple CEO Tim Cook.
According to a press release by Apple, the iPhone 5 exceeded the initial supply and that the majority of pre-orders have been shipped, but many those phones will be shipped in October.
"While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."
Despite the large sales number, the iPhone 5 still has not launched in many countries notably it will be releasing on Sept. 28 in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark and many other countries. The iPhone 5 topped two million pre-orders on the first day it was available. The two million pre-orders were more than double the previous record of one million held by iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 5 comes in either white and silver or black and slate, and is available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model. The pricing is inline with the iPhone 4s' launch last year. These prices require a new two-year rate plan from service providers AT&T, Sprint or Verizon Wireless.
Apple also announced that more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with the new iOS 6. Read about the one feature iPhone 5 owners do not like here.
