Borderlands 2 the space western first-person shooter video developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games has beaten Mass Effect 3 and claimed the title of best-selling debut launch of 2012 for the U.K., according to Chart-track.
The Borderlands sequel has sold 4,000 more copies than Bioware's and EA's Mass Effect 3 did during its spring release. According to Chart-track, the original Borderlands launched in 2009 and only reached seventh place on the charts. Borderlands 2 is currently outselling the previous installment 4 to 1 during the same period.
Boarderlands 2 has received a 90 rating on review aggregation site Metacritic. According to a recent article on Forbes, analysts Sterne Agee are predicting it will be in the running for a spot in the top four best selling video games for the year.
"Following our retail store checks and strong initial reviews, we are more confident Borderlands 2 could exceed our 4 million unit expectation," wrote Arvind Bhatia, video game analyst, in a research note. "We see potential for the game to be the 4th biggest of 2012 after Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Halo 4 and Assassin's Creed 3. Each 1 million incremental sell-through units for this title above our estimate could generate $0.17 in EPS. We believe, as expected, GameStop will have an outsized market share on the title, especially in the first few weeks."
Borderlands 2 uses cel-shaded graphics and has been labeled a "role-playing shooter" by developer Gearbox and was released for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms on Sept. 18 2012.
