Rumor: New Ecco Game in the Works?

Maybe it's happening after all. Ecco the Dolphin creator Ed Annunziata has been making some very interesting announcements on twitter today concerning the possibility of a brand new Ecco game.

Creator Ed Annunziata tweeted "Ecco fans, I need you to follow & tweethank @scottfoe, he convinced SEGA to meet with me now chances of a new Ecco the Dolphin x100!" This was later followed up by another tweet, "Spencer is on board! (puttin' the band back together!)" The Spencer he's referring to is Spencer Nielsen, the composer who worked on not only the Ecco games for the Sega CD, but also Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, and more.

This would be a great fan service. The last time Ecco was seen in any new from was on the Sega Dreamcast's Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, more than 10 years ago.

The original Ecco the Dolphin was released in 1992 for the Sega Genesis, and saw players controlling the titular dolphin as he traveld 'cross oceans and time itself to rescue his pod from a hungry alien menace known as the vortex. The game received a direct sequl on the Genesis, Ecco II: The Tides of Time, before the series ended with Defender of the Future in 2000. A sequel was planned, titled Ecco the Dolphin 2: Sentinels of the Universe, but was ultimately cancelled. Fans hopes of a future game were dashed when Sega formally announced at the beginning of 2001 that they were becoming a third party software publisher.

Despite the serious difficulty of the games, particularly the genesis games, the series were a favorite of fans', who have long since been eagerly awaiting a new title for the bottlenosed marine mammal. We'll post more as it develops.
