There are rumors that a standalone "Black Widow" movie might happen. "Avengers" director Joss Whedon said that he is interested in working on the project if Marvel gives the go signal.
Whedon told IGN at San Diego Comic-Con that he would obviously agree if there was a proposal for him to make a Black Widow movie. He said that there are two reasons why he wants to head such a project.
First, he thinks that Black Widow is a very interesting and earthbound character, so he can actually create an spy action thriller film that does not depend much on supernatural abilities that other members of the Avengers have, such as The Vision or Thor.
He admired how the Russo brothers manage to provide gritty action despite that availability of superpowers. Second, Whedon likes working with Scarlett Johansson, who first appeared as Black Widow in "Iron Man 2."
He said that the Black Widow actress is a hard worker and spends a lot of her time making the director laugh, which would add to the joy of shooting. ScreenRant noted that in the past years, talks of a Black Widow movie circulated as the fan base continued to grow.
Whedon, Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Civil War), writers Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and many more also want an independent movie for the spy heroine to happen.
The way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to move into feminist territory also strengthens the idea as Marvel's competitor, DC, is actively pushing for the appearance of more female protagonists, like Wonder Woman. It may only be a matter of time before Marvel decides to launch a Black Widow film.
io9 reported that Joss Whedon has a great background in female representation. He actually transformed Black Widow into a motherly type character in his movies, so he has about three options on how Black Widow will be depicted in her solo movie.
First, Whedon can change the character and personality entirely, completely deviating from what he has built in the past Avengers films.
Second, he can maintain the Black Widow persona, which runs the risk of boring viewers.
Third, he can opt for a prequel, which will help develop the character. It may be better if the someone new can recommend an interesting take on the character, uninspired by Whedon's works.
In the meantime, Black Widow fans will see her next in "Avengers: Infinity War Part 1" on May 4, 2018. More updates and details on Black Widow are expected soon.
