At San Diego Comic-Con 2016, the official trailer for "Justice League" was shown with more shots of Aquaman. The standalone Aquaman film is currently in the works as well, which will allegedly have a scary tone.
At the Warner Bros. SDCC panel, director James Wan said that "Aquaman" will feature horror elements that will excite viewers. He explained how he loves the fact that Aquaman has never been portrayed in the feature movie world before.
He is excited to have the opportunity to explore Aquaman's universe, as well as introduce his passion for horror into the deep sea, at the same time exploring the wondrous world of Atlantis.
Aquaman's comic version has evolved through the decades and the character has been featured with more powers and in darker situations, trying to find true purpose.
IGN noted that James Wan has established a reputation for making action and horror films. He previously directed "Furious 7" and "Conjuring 2."
The Aquaman film will not be an origin story, but will probably have ties to the Justice League.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that Will Beall ("Gangster Squad") has been tapped to write "Aquaman" The scribe will be working off the detailed story by James Wan and Geoff Johns, comics author and co-head of DC Films.
Warner Bros. was reportedly developing "Aquaman" on dual tracks and hired several writers to develop scripts at the same time. Beall and Kurt Johnstad, a usual collaborator of director Zack Snyder (Justice League), were hired in summer 2014.
In 2015, Wan was interested in directing the Aquaman movie and David Leslie Johnson, writer of "Conjuring 2" turned out to be another track.
Previously, Beall exited the Aquaman project to write and executive produce the television pilot of "Training Day" on CBS.
As Wan and Johns continued shape the story of "Aquaman," Beall was rehired to write the script as the only writer. He is currently collaborating with Wan and Johns to finalize the plot. Beall is represented by CAA and Management 360.
"Aquaman" is set to launch on July 27, 2018, starring Jason Momoa as the half-human, half-Atlantean King of the Seven Seas. Fans will see more of Aquaman in the upcoming Justice League film where he is expected to showcase his various abilities.
Other cast members include Amber Heard as Mera, Aquaman's mate and Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Aquaman's advisor.
