"The Vampire Diaries" is ending its run after the upcoming season 8 telecast. The news of the drama's cancellation on primetime TV was announced on July 23 at the San Diego Comic-Con.
Fans of the show were not thrilled with the sudden announcement but Julie Plec, "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 producer, confirmed that season 8 would be the last of the series, TV Line reported. A video showing the cast members saying their emotional goodbyes was also shown during at the Comic-Con.
"We knew it was coming, but it's still tough to say goodbye," Plec said of "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 at the SDCC. "This is going to be the final season."
Actually, the cancellation of the program was already mentioned by "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 lead star Ian Somerhalder. He hinted about the show's final season when he attended the Nashville's Walker Stalker Con on April 10.
Likewise, since Somerhalder already revealed it, the announcement at the SDCC was just a confirmation from The CW network about "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8. For the "Vampire Diaries" last bow, some of the original cast members are coming back to complete the story.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Nina Dobrev who left the show in season 6 is one of the characters who will appear again. The show's producer said that Dobrev told them before that, if there is something for her in the finale, she would do it, thus she will definitely return in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8.
The show is concluding after eight years of entertaining the American audience. The last 16 episodes are airing on CW Network starting Oct. 21. For viewers in the United Kingdom, the date for "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 premiere is still uncertain because the second part of season 7 is still airing at the moment.
