“Pacific Rim: Maelstrom” is not due for release until 2018 but of interest to most is whether there would be cast members returning for the sequel.
To date, there is no definitive word on whether Charlie Hunnam or Rinko Kikuhci would be returning to pilot the one of the ‘Jaegers’ though many find some reprieve in Guillermo Del Toro’s interview with THR.
The “Pacific Rim” director may have hinted at ‘some’ original cast members returning meaning that either Hunnam or Kikuchi will be back. Del Torro adds that casting announcements will entirely be up to the hands of new director, Steven S. DeKnight.
“As a producer I learned not to declare anything about a movie I’m not directing. I can tell you this — a lot of the cast from the first movie is coming back. I leave those communications to [Pacific Rim 2 director] Steven DeKnight. He’s not only a director, but he’s actually a guy I respect and admire and it’s his movie.”
High expectations with John Boyega in the sequel
John Boyega was previously announced as joining the cast, one of the meager big developments tied up to “Pacific Rim 2”. Based on Del Toro’s description, Boyega will play the son of “Idris Elba” who succumbed in the first movie.
He goes on to add that Boyega may portray a different kind of character in the sequel but is more likely to pilot one of the Jaegers against possible new threats.
Boyega and Scott Eastwood together?
With the original cast return still hanging, Game N Guide did report on another possible addition in Scott Eastwood earlier this month. The son of legendary actor Clint Eastwood was still in talks with Legendary Pictures.
While the addition of Eastwood could be something, it all depends on his schedule. He has a packed load with other film commitments so it will be interesting if he accepts. Eastwood is being offered a major role on “Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom” slated to hit theaters on Feb. 23, 2018.
