“Game of Thrones” just wrapped up its sixth season, something highlighted by 23 Emmy nominations. It marked the 3rd year in a row that the drama series has gained distinction though all that could end next year.
Details on the seventh season of “Game of Thrones” is out and the next season will only see a total of seven episodes. This will be another significant drop from the sixth season which ended with only 10.
A reason behind the whittled show count of “Game of Thrones” is that there are no more than 15 episodes remaining per Comicbook.com. There will be two seasons left to cover all of that, the remainder of which will likely comprise the eighth season.
Countdown starts for 'Game of Thrones' Season 7
With only seven episodes to work on, could such be the reason why production will start later than usual? With all the time in the world it could make sense.
But according to HBO programming president Casey Bloys, the executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that starting at a later date would be better since the weather is changing. Hence, instead of the traditional Spring debut, “Game of Thrones” will return in the Summer, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
'Game of Thrones' Season 7 shooting locations bared
With the production roadmap for “Game of Thrones” season seven set, the first stop will reportedly be in Northern Ireland. From there, the cast and crew will move to other locations as well. That includes stops at Spain where filming will be done in places like Sevilla, Caceres, Almodovar del Rio, Santiponce, Zumaia and Berneo.
The reduced episode count may sound disappointing but all of this was already laid out in the open before. Showrunners did mention that they were writing the final act where about 70 to 75 hours are left before the final credits roll for the last time.
“Game of Thrones” ranks as HBO's most-watched series and is the cable company’s longest-running show currently on the air.
