Amy Hennig, writer of the first three Uncharted games spoke at a panel at Star Wars Celebration. She is also the current creative director of the new Star Wars title by Electronic Arts (EA) and Visceral Games and gave some insight on how she plans to develop the new story.
According to Hennig, she plans to deconstruct the movies and determine how these can be adapted to video games. the approach was actually the same when she was working on the Uncharted Games at Naughty Dog.
GameSpot cited Hennig in saying that they are collaborating with Lucasfilm very closely because they are writing an original Star Wars story with new characters, creatures, locations, technologies and more.
Everything that they introduce should merge authentically with the features that people are already familiar with.
VG247 stated that according to Hennig, the process for the new Star Wars title is very similar to the one she used with Uncharted. To achieve the adaptation that she envisions, the films have to be deconstructed so that these can be rebuilt in an interactive context as gameplay.
The end goal is reportedly to let players feel as if they truly played a Star Wars film by the time they finish the game. She is trying to get the structure right, which means understanding where the act breaks fall, where the reversals and obstacles fall and the set-pieces.
All the components that make up a Star Wars story have to be understood.
As for the tone, the new Star Wars title is also quite the same as Uncharted. Hennig's writing partner Todd Stashwick described it as "breezy urgency." There will reportedly be humor and buoyancy, although at the same time, Star Wars players will encounter stakes and jeopardy.
The new Star Wars title will also reportedly have an ensemble cast. Compared to Indiana Jones, which features other side characters, the upcoming Star Wars title will include co-protagonists, so the story will delve into different experiences as well.
Hennig explained that the characters have to be a coordinated ensemble who act in the moment and in parallel. Everyone has to do their part in parallel to accomplish their missions. The characters in "Star Wars" are always outnumbered and outgunned, which require them to be smarter than their enemies.
A lot of teamwork is required, so they have to figure out how they can incorporate these important elements in the actual gameplay.
There are rumors that the Star Wars game will either be a third-person action adventure game or an open-world. More updates and details are expected soon.
