“Sherlock” is due for a fourth season but co-creator Steven Moffat seems to be hinting that it could very well be the last one.
According to a report from the Telegraph, Moffat was a bit surprised to see main stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman available for “Sherlock” season 4. With due consideration to their respective schedules, he wouldn’t be surprised if it came to a point where BBC would be encountering problems in the future.
“Sherlock” season 4 could be last
Moving forward, Moffat is prepared for anything. But looking further down the line, he foresees a possible hiatus in the horizon due to scheduling conflicts involving Cumberbatch and Freeman.
"There would be nothing strange in stopping for a while. It could go on forever, coming back now and again," said Moffat.
The good news is that Moffat believes that both Cumberbatch and Freeman returned without the influence of money for Sherlock. So if ever a series shelving (or death?) arises in the future, it will be more about the time element and commitment that both stars can give.
All that aside, focus is now on what “Sherlock” season 4 will have to offer. Though no details have been revealed as of yet, word around is that Toby Jones will be playing the role of villain.
Aside from that, it was mentioned in a previous post that Tom Hiddleston was being considered by director Mark Gatiss as possibly playing the third brother of Sherlock, “Sherrinford”. One thing that could make this work is the fact that Hiddleston and Cumberbatch are close friends.
But like Cumberbatch and Freeman, Hiddleston has a hectic schedule as well. Aside from “The Avengers” and “Thor”, the boyfriend of Taylor Smith is being considered as a replacement for Daniel Craig as the next “James Bond”.
