EA is certainly outdoing itself with the release of "Battlefield 1," the World War I-set iteration of their hugely popular "Battlefield" series of first-person shooters.
Although the colors in the game look more than a little desaturated (perhaps to go for a grittier war palette) "Battlefield 1" still looks very pretty. That wasn't enough for YouTube user "jackfrags," who decided he wanted a better-looking "Battlefield."
He recorded some video in the game's closed alpha session, turned it all the way up to 4K (which the game supports), removed the HUD interface, and applied some color-correction via third-party software to make the visuals look closer to real life. The results are, needless to say, stunning:
The grayer, desaturated look EA's going for is replaced with a much more vivid and true-to-life color grading. We get that it's a decision to stylize the game, but sometimes pushing for the gritty, gray look is bordering on parodying the currently trending "bleak" aesthetic that's prevalent in most movies and video games.
It's far-fetched, but it would be great if developer DICE added color-correction and other similar display options to "Battlefield 1." "Battlefield 1," EA's first World War I-themed game since 1994's "Wings of Glory" (and their first throwback "Battlefield" since "Battlefield 1943") is a revamped edition of the game, featuring six distinct play classes that match different playstyles instead of a one-size-fits-all type of play.
The six classes are the Assault class, the Medic class, the Support class, the Scout class, the Tanker class, and the Pilot class, mimicking similar shooters with different class systems. "Battlefield 1" is scheduled for release on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC on October 21 later this year, and has already been nominated for quite a number of awards at this year's Game Critics Awards, winning Best Action Game.
