iPhone 5: Pre-Orders Sell Out in One Hour

In case you've been living under a rock, Apple recently announced its newest model of iPhone, the humbly named iPhone 5.

Apple began accepting pre-orders yesterday, and promptly sold out. In an hour. Compare this to their last model launch, where they sold out of the iPhone 4S in 22 hours.

As of 1 AM Pacific Time, any new order placed online was greeted with a message warning purchasers of an estimated 2 week shipping time, as opposed to the promised delivery date of September 21. The sheer volume of pre-orders could be explained by the absurd anticipation for the new model iPhone, which offers a larger screen, is taller, thinner, lighter in weight, supports 4G LTE, a new processor, smaller port, improved resolution, and camera upgrades. Also, the iPhone 5 was available in nine locations total, adding Hong Kong and Singapore, whereas the iPhone 4S was only available in seven countries initially.

And oh yeah, the amount of pre-orders were so massive, that several online stores, including Apple's and AT&T's, were knocked offline.

Some were reporting success by making their iPhone 5 orders through Apple's iOS app, but for those who tried ordering at other sites in countries like Germany and France were met with error messages.

If you're one of no doubt many who didn't make it in time to pre-order the new iPhone, your best bet now may be to head to your nearest Apple store, and start waiting in line.

Apple is offering the iPhone 5 in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models, starting at $199, $299, and $399 respectively.
