The iPhone 7 is nearing its debut and such could affect other iPhones in the mix. The leading devices likely to be affected are the iPhone 6s/ 6s Plus as well as the budget-friendly iPhone SE.
Apple follows a certain trend when it comes to maintaining a proper amount of iPhone offered. Based on current trends, five iPhones will be retained with the old ones experiencing price dropsas 9to5 Mac points out.
The debate right now is how many iPhone 7 classes are coming. The belief is that there will be three variants out in the open with base model offering 32 GB storage. Aside from that, there will be one rumored to be retaining the 3.5 mm jack. Much of that can be read via this previous post.
Who bites the dust?
The word out is that the iPhone 7 will not look that different from the iPhone 6s/ 6s Plus. Apple has opted to save its major design changes for the iPhone 8 to that too could be a factor.
With the impending scenario, there are some who may opt to get the iPhone 6s/6s Plus since it is expected to have a lower price. Right now, the resale value remains competitive as explained in another post.
With an aptly performing iPhone 6s/6s Plus, a logical choice would see the iPhone SE. But the problem is that the iPhone SE has hardly propagated and has been impressive according to Zac Hall. Being the cheapest of the mix, its features make it a good buy altogether.
A dilemma for Apple
With all these facts on the table, Apple could end up either upping the maintained models in the iPhone mix to 6 or pick their poison and shelve one.
Of the two, it seems more likely that they will choose the latter since no one expected to see three iPhone 7s in the first place.
Given the choice, which variant would you kill off if you had to choose between the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus and the SE?
