YouTuber Visits The Vatican; Gifts Pope Francis A Copy Of Toby Fox's RPG Hit 'Undertale'; Here's Why

One YouTube user recently visited the Vatican and was fortunate enough to meet Pope Francis. He gifted the religious leader with a copy of "Undertale," the hit role-playing game.

YouTuber MatPat, who is best known online for his fan theories, met the Pope earlier in 2016 during a summit that delved on how the internet brought people together. He decided to give the head of the Roman Catholic Church a token that represents his culture and generation - "Undertale" by Toby Fox.

A 16-minute video detailed why MatPat thought of giving the Pope "Undertale," among other things. He explained that the RPG speaks the Pope's language. The Vatican leader proclaimed 2016 as the year of mercy for the entire Catholic Church to celebrate forgiveness and compassion, instead of retaliation and violence.

In the same sense, mercy is the recurring theme throughout the game. MatPat continued that "Undertale" represents an evolution for gamers, as well as their expectations in the titles they are fond of. According to the YouTuber, the game is the single best representative of their stance as a community at present.

Kotaku noted MatPat in saying how "Undertale" effective sends the message about friendship and acceptance. Gamers may also realize that fans of the game are known for being somewhat overzealous in sharing their passion and love for the title.

In "Undertale," players take on the role of a human child who fell into a huge region below the Earth's surface that has been divided by a magic barrier. The main quest involves trying to get back to the surface and players will encounter various challenges and monsters.

The game also includes other characters, dialogue and a storyline, although these can change depending on the decisions that players make throughout. Gamers can opt to kill, befriend or run from enemies, which will also have different outcomes. "Undertale" includes a combat system and musical score as well.

The title launched on Steam for Microsoft Windows and OS X on Sept. 15, 2015 and received much acclaim and positive reviews from both gamers and critics.

Polygon cited that "Undertale" did not undergo a physical launch so MatPat most likely presented the Pope with a Steam code, instead of a disc. It is still uncertain whether the Pope already redeemed the code or tried the game.

The Catholic leader has not commented on his new unique gift yet. More updates and details are expected soon.
