BioWare officially announced the "Mass Effect" film adaptation in May 2010. The film will be co-produced and co-finance by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. "The Amazing Spider-Man's" Avi Arad is producing, with BioWare's own Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Casey Hudson serving as executive producers.
At a San Diego Comic-Con 2011 panel for the film Legendary Pictures stated that the film's plot will be an adaptation of the first game's story, centering on Commander Shepard's journey. The writer of "I am Legend," and "The Cell," Mark Protosevich is writing the screenplay.
According to the panel, "the writer is weaving a path through Shepard's decisions that best supports the narrative of the movie and the motivations of its characters." They also announced that the film's Commander Shepard would be male.
No release date or casting has been announced. Now that the Mass Effect triology is over, it is time to start talking about the movie. Here is a list of who we think should be cast in the film. Take a look below...
Commander Shepard: Matthew Fox is known for his role as Charlie Salinger on Party of Five, and for portraying Jack Shephard on the supernatural drama television series Lost. Yes he has already played a Shephard. But in all seriousness he really looks the part. He was also pretty good as a Secret Service agent in the film "Vantage Point." If not Fox, I'd go with James Lafferty of "S. Darko" and "One Tree Hill" fame. Lafferty is a younger and cheaper star for a potential future film franchise.
Garrus Vakarian: Here is one of those cases where I ask why change perfection? Brandon Keener was perfect as Shepard's best friend and teammate Garrus Vakarian. Whoever is eventually cast as the character will be covered up in prosthetics. So you don't need a big name here.
Liara T'Soni: I would like to see Jennifer Lawrence, as Dr. Liara T'Soni in a Mass Effect move. I think she will be a perfect fit as the asari researcher who has spent 50 years of her life studying Prothean technology and culture. Lawrence has already showed movie goers she looks good with blue skin in "X-Men: First Class."
Ashley Williams: Jessica Biel should play Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams. She is beautiful, physically fit and she has in the past shown the ability to play military personal with some admirable conviction. I could definitely see her reciting poetry, while carrying a rifle.
Kaidan Alenko: I would go unknown here. He definitely dies in my version of the movie. I might even combine his character with Richard Jenkins aka Geth plasma cannon fodder.
Joker: Seth Green is Flight Lieutenant Jeff "Joker" Moreau. There can be but one. This is a case where the voice actor nails it and deserves to continue the role. Think Optimus Prime in The "Transformers" film series.
Tali'Zorah nar Rayya: Mila Kunis would be great as Tali. She can speak Russian, can play a role that require her to be naïve and has the ability to grow within the character. He appearance in "The book of Eli" proved she has the acting chops to pull of a role of this caliber.
Urdnot Wrex: The famed krogan mercenary and bounty hunter, Urdnot Wrex is also one of the last Krogan Battlemasters and should be a completely CGI creation in the film. He should be large, rugged, and brutish. He should be voice by the man who has voiced Wrex since the beginning, Steven Barr.
David Anderson: Anderson should be play by in-game voice actor Keith David or Lawrence Fishburne.
Saren Arterius: This is the out-of-the-box pick. Action star Vin Diesel would excel in this role. Vin was a terrific voice actor in the "Iron Giant" and shined as a Villain/anti-hero in "Pitch Black." Put some prosthetics on him and watch him transform into a tragic villain and betrayer of the galaxy.
