After a decade of waiting, game enthusiasts may soon get their hands on the highly anticipated Half Life 3. Although the American video game company behind the Half Life franchise, Valve, is tight lipped about the third installment of the game, fans are still positive that Half Life 3 would finally see the light in 2018.
Previous rumors indicate that the third installment of the first person shooter game will be unveiled during Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016 (E3); however, E3 2016 passed and no confirmation yet whether Valve is really working on the said title.
Fast forward now, with newer consoles supporting Virtual Reality being introduced to gamers, reports are loud that Valve is prepping up to bring Half Life 3 on VR. It is said that Valve is currently focused on working a complete Half Life 3 VR format, which is slated to be released in 2018, marking Half Life franchise's 20th anniversary. It is said that the company has been mum with the game's development stage to keep fans' interest towards Half Life 3.
According to The News Independent, Valve's priority as of the moment is Half Life 3, as the company even appointed one third of its workforce to solely work for the upcoming VR game. Though the American game developer refused to comment on Half Life 3's development stage, the same publication noted what Valve's hardware engineer Alan Yates commented via Reddit.
Yates said that he is very fortunate to start working in Valve while Michael Abrash is just beginning to put up its AR/VR research team. He added that "It was a much smaller team then than it is now, it has since grown to encompass about a third of the company, but the key individuals that solved most of the really hard technological problems and facilitated this generation of consumer headsets are still here working on the next generation."
With that said, it may imply that all key individuals in Valve are working on the next gen technology, which may mean the Virtual Reality. If this is to be believed, then more of Valve's upcoming games, including Half Life 3, will completely be delivered in VR format.
Meanwhile, aside from working on Half Life 3, Valve is said to be pre-occupied with Left 4 Dead 3. A leaked folder file image can be seen in Valve Time, suggesting that the game is indeed in the works. It can also be seen in the image that a Portal folder is shown, which led fans to speculate that the company is also working on Portal 3.
Valve has yet to confirm or deny if Half Life 3, Portal 3 and Left 4 Dead 3 is currently in the works.
