Fans of Street Fighter V will be able to watch the world championship match of the gaming tournament on TV as ESPN2 announced that it will broadcast the game live. The affiliation of the prominent sports network with Evolution Championship Series or Evo is actually a move to get into the ever-growing trend in e-Sports tournaments.
For starters, ESPN already launched an e-Sports segment, complete with its own editorial team, earlier this year. It was created so there will be a section that will wholly focus on professional gaming, USA Today reported.
ESPN2 confirmed its live coverage of the Street Fighter V world championship on July 1. The network also relayed that the event is taking place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and it will start at 10 p.m. ET on July 17.
John Lasker, ESPN Digital Media vice president of programming and acquisitions, said via press release, "The Street Fighter V World Championship will be one of the must-see competitions from the Evo finals."
He added, "We are always exploring ways to serve the growing and passionate audience of competitive gaming, and we look forward to delivering this event to fans."
The elite Street Fighter V is just one of plays to watch out for in the 3-day fighting game tournament which is held annually through Evo. Those who registered for live viewing as well as those who bought tickets for the event will get to see other games like Tekken 7, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mortal Kombat X, at the designated venues.
Speaking of the registration, the Evolution Championship Series broke several records this year. One of the most notable was Street Fighter V's number of registrants which surpassed all past registration records by getting 5,000 entries from Street Fighter V players.
Evolution Championship Series is happening from July 15 to 17. The first two days of the tournament is taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center while the final plays are going to be set up at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
