'Star Trek Beyond' Release Details: Rihanna Releases Music Video For 'Sledgehammer' And Its' Awesome [Watch]

Music has always been a big part of Star Trek's signature identity and this has been consistent for the past 50 years. The movie will be having its 50th anniversary on September 2016 and for that special celebration, Rihanna has released a music video for the franchise.

The song for "Star Trek Beyond" is titled "Sledgehammer." The video was released on the pop star's official VEVO channel showcasing what seems to be an alien planet in "Star Trek," Polygon shared.

While the lyrics of song do not directly relate to "Star Trek," it may have something related to the theme of "Star Trek Beyond."

Other than the music video's release, Rihanna also gave fans a short featurette where she was wearing a classic "Star Trek" fan t-shirt. In the video, she told viewers that she has been a lifelong fan of the franchise.

Rihanna recalled that it was her father who introduced "Star Trek" to her when she was still a little girl.

Rihanna said that it only took one episode for her to fall in love with the show and be enamoured of the alien world that she was not able to understand but felt like she was able to relate to. She added that "Star Trek" has always been a big part of her childhood.

Some commentators say that "Sledgehammer" may sound like a James Bond movie song rather than an alien movie song. However, there have been raves about the song, as well.

It is expected that Rihanna's large international fan base will collect positive attention for "Star Trek Beyond."

However, it is also expected that backlash coming from long-time "Star Trek" fans will rise. Some have argued that her song does not have a "Star Trek" feeling to it. They say it contrasts with the Trek nerd ethos to showcase a song sung by a glamorous pop star.

Despite the negative feedback, the song might likely play during the "Star Trek Beyond" closing credits rather than other parts of the film.

Some of the singers and composers that were used by the franchise in their previous films or series include Alexander Courage, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Giacchino and Diane Warren.

However, throughout the franchise's history it is only now that a theme song by a pop star will be used, Screen Rant shares.
