Bill Goldberg carved a name for himself in the WCW and briefly in the WWE but has since been out of the wrestling entertainment scene. That was until his character surfaced to be part of WWE 2K17 recently, sparking yet again rumors of a possible return to the ring.
At 49 years old, Goldberg may no longer have the legs to compete with the younger wrestling stars of today. But like his comrade Sting (Steve Borden), William Scott “Bill” Goldberg is seen as someone who can still get it on with the same ‘jackhammer’ finishes that made him a fierce force to content with.
Despite his popularity, critics believe that his talent was heavily underutilized both in the WCW and the WWE. Much of that was covered on the Bleacher Report, singling out how Goldberg did more for the sport as a non-champion.
He did become champion in both the WCW and WWE. The problem is that when he was on top, there were no creative gimmicks used to wane on his success. Such is seen as the reason why his reigns were cut short. Regardless, his popularity continues to be enormous.
This is not to say that Goldberg is not suited to be a champion. It all depends on the creative teams handling the situation. As far as the WWE is concerned, everyone knows how fans have criticized the way creative teams have handled the storylines, one reason seen behind the falling ratings.
Goldberg bares through 411Mania that he hasn’t been contacted for a possible return. Despite that, it could still happen though there is no telling when. But at his age, it seems unlikely that he could be instilled as champion and do the same things he did from yesteryears.
The best scenario for Goldberg is to follow the footsteps of legendary wrestlers like Sting and add a bit of flavor to the shows. As he did before, Goldberg doesn’t need to be champion to prove his stock. He is a big draw before and most certainly can pack it in again with some creativity in tow.
