The forefather of modern day video game stealth espionage Metal Gear is coming to a theater near you. The movie was announced at Konami's Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event and the film will be made in association with Columbia Pictures.
The producer of Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man," Avi Arad will be producing and was on stage at the event.
"For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters - and video games are the comics of today," Arad said, as reported by attendee John Ricciardi on his Twitter feed and reported later by IGN.
This isn't the first time a Metal Gear film was planned. In May 2006 Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima announced that a film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid was in development. The film had a anticipated release date of some time in 2011, but the project never got off the ground and was postponed in 2010.
The stealth video game series Metal Gear was created by Hideo Kojima and developed and published by Konami. The first game, Metal Gear, was released in 1987. This year is the 25th Anniversary of the Metal Gear series; the 'Tactical Espionage Action' series was first launched on MSX.
Gamers played as a Special Forces operative codenamed Solid Snake who is assigned to find the super weapon "Metal Gear", a bipedal walking tank with the ability to launch nuclear weapons.
The game franchise has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, with individual installments being critically acclaimed and receiving several awards.
The franchise has also branched out into other media such as comics and drama CDs and an action figure line of toys.
There are nine games total in the series with the tenth Metal Gear: Rising Revengeance set to release in early 2013. No other details on the movie were announced.
