"Game of Thrones" Season 6 Episode 10 will soon air on HBO and there are huge expectations for "The Winds of Winter". Will it be better than the masterpiece that was "Battle of the Bastards"?
However, it isn't fair to compare a season finale with the ninth episode of "Game of Thrones" Season 6. Instead, it is time to see if "The Winds of Winter" will top the previous season finales.
As a recap, here are the "Game of Thrones" season finales, ranked from awesome to absolutely breathtaking.
"Valar Morghulis" from "Game of Thrones" Season 2
The final episode of Season 2 offered a bewitching look at Daenerys Targaryen finally finding her dragons and displaying her powers. It also revealed a first look at Dany's thirst for power as she locks Xaro Xhoan Daxos in his vault and takes valuables to purchase a ship.
However, "Valar Morghulis" did not conclude with Dany's story, which already worked in "Game of Thrones" Season 1 and Season 3 (see below).
Nevertheless, the episode gets points for showing just how many White Walkers Westeros has to deal with.
"Mhysa" from "Game of Thrones" Season 3
Who doesn't love Daenerys Targaryen? The newly freed slaves of Yunkai certainly adored her in the last episode of "Game of Thrones" Season 3.
Dany's rise in Yunkai ensured that "Mhysa" would end on a positive note, perhaps to make up for the horrors that happened in the episode "The Rains of Castamere" (because the Red Wedding).
Luckily, it isn't the only season finale that concludes with hope.
"The Children" from "Game of Thrones" Season 4
Dany's story is rather bleak in the "Game of Thrones" Season 4 finale as she realizes Drogon has killed a girl so she decides to imprison her other dragons. "The Children" also features Tyrion Lannister's tear-jerking murder of Shae and his father Tywin.
As previously mentioned, there is hope in this particular season finale. Bran Stark finally reaches the Three-Eyed Raven and is promised that he will fly. Meanwhile, Arya Stark takes the long journey to Braavos.
"The Children" was an award-winning episode, but it couldn't match the jaw-dropping conclusion of the first season.
"Fire and Blood" from "Game of Thrones" Season 1
Is there anything more amazing than the "Game of Thrones" Season 1 finale? "Fire and Blood" certainly made sure Daenerys Targaryen would be the show's most effective closer.
After the death of Khal Drogo, her unborn son and the loss of their Khalasar, Dany decides to go into the funeral pyre. What followed was one of the most memorable resurrections in TV history.
However, a resurrection is not what makes the best "Game of Thrones" season finale the best so far.
"Mother's Mercy" from "Game of Thrones" Season 5
Theon kills Myranda to help Sansa Stark escape Ramsay Bolton. Myrcella and Jaime Lannister bond before she dies from poison. Arya murders Ser Meryn and gets blinded. Dany finds a Dothraki horde.
These are not what made "Mother's Mercy" so awesome. The two scenes that dominated over the "Game of Thrones" Season 5 finale were Cersei's walk of shame and the sad, sad death of Jon Snow.
Jon Snow's death alone kept fans talking about the show well into the premiere of "Game of Thrones" Season 6.
Hopefully, "The Winds of Winter" will top that shocking scene to keep everyone on their toes until next year.
