'The Ghostbusters' Animated Series Is Returning To TV! 'Ecto Force' Takes Place In 2050

A new Ghostbusters animated TV series is set to air in 2018. Titled, "Ghostbusters: Ecto Force," the series is reportedly being planned by Sony Pictures Animation.

According to Sony, "Ghostbusters: Ecto Force" will focus on a new generation of Ghostbusters in a futuristic setting, particularly the year 2050, who will take on ghosts and monsters around the globe. They will be equipped with state-of-the-art gear and get support from local teams.

The series is said to be part of a Ghostbusters cinematic universe by Sony, which may eventually create another movie, with an all-male group. The upcoming movie features an all-female crew and is set to launch in summer 2016.

Wired revealed that "Ghostbusters: Ecto Force" will be the third animated movie that showcases the ghost-fighting team. The original launched in 1986, close to the release of the first live-action film. It ran for 140 episodes and produced 33 spin-off episodes that delved much on the green ghost, Slimer.

The second animated outing was in 1997, which ran for 40 episodes. The second series introduced the first female Ghostbuster, Kylie Griffin. Not a lot of details have been revealed about the upcoming show, although there are rumors that it will focus on an international team of Ghostbusters, quite similar to the current version in the comics.

ScreenRant stated that "Ghostbusters: Ecto Force" will be produced by Ivan Reitman and Ghost Corps, his production company. Reitman is the director of the original film. The story will not be contained within New York City, where the team has generally been capturing ghosts in the past decades.

In the new version, they will be seeking out ghouls on an international scale and also find help from local ghostbusters. Fans may discover more about culture and tradition as the Ghostbusters take on supernatural threats abroad.

"Ghostbusters: Ecto Force" will showcase a new generation of Ghostbusters, so fans should not expect to see familiar characters. There is a possibility that the group may even be diverse in both gender and race. Considering the futuristic setting, the squad is expected to use a variety of special weapons. It is still uncertain whether Slimer will make a comeback or whether the team will also introduce a new friendly sidekick.

"Ghostbusters: Ecto Force" is set to launch early in 2018. The Paul Feig all-female Ghostbusters movie is slated to launch on July 15, 2016. More updates and details are expected soon.
