At YouTube's "Live at E3" video stream, Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer Todd Howard, best known for heading the development of the "Fallout" and "Elder Scrolls" series of games, addressed what he described as the "elephant in the room" that his studio has had to deal with.
" And I think it's good in these moments to tell our fans, 'Yes, of course we are. It's something we love,'" he said, confirming that development was indeed under way. He however went on to clarify, "but it is, you know, I have to be careful what I say - it's a very long way off." He also echoed his studio's previous statement that they're currently working on two other large projects, and added, "People will probably hear about those even before Elder Scrolls VI. "
Howard continued by saying that they're a developer who "[thinks] very long term" and aren't the kind who would "rush something like [The Elder Scrolls VI] out." He went on to imply that the technology necessary to create their vision for the Elder Scrolls VI might not currently be available. He remained unclear as to what the two other projects were, but mentioned that there was a very short gap between hearing about Fallout 4 and the game coming out.
E3's Bethesda show also featured Howard and more "Elder Scrolls" news, where he announced The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, a remaster of the critically-acclaimed 2011 entry in the franchise. The game will feature improved visuals and console mod support, and will be launched on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 28. PC owners who have either the base game and all DLC, or the Legendary Edition, will receive the Special Edition for free.
