David Cage, Director of Beyond: Two Souls, Says it's Time for the Game Industry to "Grow Up"

At Gamescom, the director for Heavy Rain and the upcoming Beyond: Two Souls, David Cage, spoke with Gamasutra about some of his problems with the gaming industry, and how it needs to move forward.

"I think we should have more courage in our industry and take more risks, because I think this is what the industry needs now. I mean, how many first person shooters can you make? How many monsters/aliens/zombies can you kill in games? There's a moment where we need to grow up. We need to grow up," Cage told Gamasutra.

Agreed. However, the problem is that while most of us have grown with the industry (According to the Entertainment Software Association, the average game player is 30, and the average game buyer is 35), videogames overall are still looked at something "for kids." As a result, a great many developers are afraid to explore typically more "adult" themes.

"I often think that the industry suffers of the Peter Pan syndrome. It's the fact that we don't want to grow up, so we stay kids. But there is a moment where you need to grow up as an industry. And you cannot keep up with the Peter Pan syndrome. You need to grow. And I think this is the right time," he said.

If Cage's upcoming Beyond: Two Souls proves to be a success, then the rest of the industry will likely follow Cage's lead, and try to grow up.
