The Mechromancer Coming Sooner Than Expected to Borderlands 2

Once upon a time, the Mechromancer wasn't going to make her debtut until at least 60 days after Borderlands 2 was released on September 18. Thankfully, for all you impatient types, she should be arriving a bit sooner.

Producer Randy Varnell is confident that the Gearbox staff can build her much faster than previously thought, recently telling Joystiq at Gamescom, "We're going to beat that [60 day] estimate." Unfortunately, he couldn't give an exact date, but I'll gladly take a wait of less than 60 days.

Beyond that, nothing else has been made available about what will no doubt be a very welcome addition to Borderlands 2's kooky characters. Something of a cyborg, little is known about the Mechromancer, even her actual name. She'll have the ability to take control of mechs, and will also be able to summon the D374-TP, lovingly referred to as the "Deathtrap," what Gearbox's president Randy Pitchford described as claptraps big angry cousin, calling it a, "gigantic evil robot that'll just beat the living shit out of the enemies."

But until that day comes, we'll just have to settle for the other new characters calling Pandora home:

* Gunzerker Salvador epitomizes the guns, guns, and more guns feature that made Borderlands famous. Not one for subtlety, Salvador is all about going in guns blazing, shooting first, and asking questions never.

* Replacing Lilith is the siren Maya, whose "Phaselock" ability traps enemies in a ball of energy, keeping them contained so that the player can dole out the damage.

* Commando class Axton is the resident soldier, dealing damage with a tricky turret. As one of the most popular player types in the first game, players should feel very much at home with Axton.

* Finally, the assassin Zer0 is a master of stealth and swordsmanship, but won't shy away from guns. The sniper of the group.
