Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" in 2004 was critically acclaimed with a number of nominations and a box office hit. So, the 60-year-old veteran actor together with the screenwriter Randall Wallace are working on the next sequel of the epic drama movie.
Jesus' Resurrection
Randall Wallace explained that the follow-up film of "The Passion of the Christ" will evolve to the story of Jesus' resurrection. In fact, he boasted that Christ's renaissance is his area of expertise as he is a religion major at Duke University.
"I always wanted to tell this story," Randall Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter. "'The Passion is the beginning and there's a lot more story to tell."
A Screenplay In The Works
Randall Wallace then revealed he is already working on the screenplay of the second movie of "The Passion of the Christ." He also added that hiding something as big of a project as "The Passion of the Christ" is quite impossible.
Randall Wallace explained that a big part of his decision to create a sequel is the Christian community.
"The evangelical community considers 'The Passion' the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger," the screenwriter said.
However, Mel Gibson's representative refused to comment on his participation in the next film of "The Passion of the Christ."
'The Passion Of The Christ'
To recall, Mel Gibson directed "The Passion of the Christ" led by Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ, as per USA Today. The film told the last 12 hours of Jesus' life before his crucifixion.
"The Passion of The Christ" got nominated for three Oscar recognitions in 2015 and earned more than $600 million ticket sales. The movie, too, was dubbed as the highest grossing religious film of all time.
Randall Wallace And Mel Gibson
Slash Film reported that this is not the first time Randall Wallace and Mel Gibson work together.
As a matter of fact, Randall Wallace wrote Mel Gibson's 1995 film "Braveheart," "We Were Soldiers" in 2002 and the actor's upcoming directorial movie, "Hacksaw Ridge."
The planned sequel of "The Passion of the Christ" has no definite film production and release date yet.
