Marco Rubio recently apologized for implying that Donald Trump has a small penis. However, he still believes that the presidential candidate is a horrible person.
The U.S. senator apologized on air for his “small hands” joke against the billionaire in February 2016. Rubio said that he cannot trust men with small hands, referring to Trump.
Trump subsequently answered Rubio’s comments during a presidential debate, implying that his penis was not undersized.
Rubio shared that he regretted telling the joke and felt that it did not represent his character or integrity. He added that it was made out of desperation, considering that his other campaign strategies were not apparently working at the time.
“It embarrassed my family. It’s not who I am. What I didn’t realize was it isn’t who I am and if you’re not being who you are it doesn’t come across well,” Rubio said during an interview with CNN.
Jezebel cited Rubio in saying that Trump constantly mocks people and continues to do so. However, he could not do the same or respond in the same manner because it is not who he is, and he only ends up hurting himself, not his then-opponent, by going to the same level.
CNN reported that Rubio also apologized privately to Trump personally backstage before a Republican debate for his previous remarks. The Florida senator added that he will support Trump in the November elections and is willing to speak on his behalf at the convention.
Rubio also suggested that Trump should not significantly change his approach in the general election. He explained that Trump has been successful in attacking his opponents and addressing issues in his own way in the past several months. Although not everyone may agree with Trump’s direction, his formula apparently works and he should continue on that road.
Rubio also took time to assess his own mistakes during the political campaign. The former presidential candidate said that he did not have a logical political base to develop. He spent a lot of time raising funds for his campaign instead of focusing on the campaign itself.
Although Rubio is no longer in the running, he expects to continue working in the private sector if he does not run for the Senate again. He also has dreams of being NFL commissioner. He said that he will learn from his experience and whether he decides to set his sights on the White House again or join the business world, he expects to be stronger and better.
