"The Dark Knight Rises" is on the way to box office gold, breaking records by earning over $30 million from its midnight screenings around the country on early Friday morning, an event which has unfortunately taken a back seat to last night's shooting in Colorado.
Many were asking if DC's vigilante would have the strength to go up against the box office earnings of Marvel's "The Avengers," especially after DC's poor showing at the box office of late with poorly received movies like "Green Lantern" and "Jonah Hex." But it seems like DC is up to the challenge. The $30.6 million earned by "The Dark Knight Rises" leaves Marvel's "Avengers" midnight opening numbers of $18 million in the dust. "The Avengers" also had the benefit of being in 3D, boosting numbers due to increased ticket costs.
"Rises" numbers make it the second-biggest midnight debut ever, following the finale to the Harry Potter's franchise, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2."
Nolan's last Batman film, "The Dark Knight," earned $158.4 million during its opening weekend in 2008, making it the highest grossing opening ever for a 2D film. Both "Marvel's The Avengers" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" earned more, but were both available to see in 3D.
With "The Dark Knight Rises" in theaters now, we have the rest of the weekend to see how it will fare against Marvel at the box office.
