Sony has announced during the New Year weekend it's plans to hold their press conference on Tuesday, January 5th at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada at exactly 5pm PST. The livestream for the event can be viewed here.
There are strong speculations that this event will finally unveil Sony's PlayStation VR. A few weeks ago, President of Worldwide Studios at SCE, Shuhei Yoshida, made a confident statement in an interview with Gamespot, saying that 2016 will be a big year for the PlayStation VR and is hopeful that it will propel sales even further. On top of this statement, Sony's website for CES announcements include the picture of the VR headset along with its new smartphone and flat screen.
While there are possible delays before the VR hits the market, it's only real competitor is the Oculus Rift which is also suffering from delays. Sony also has another chance to debut the product at the annual Game Developer's Conference on March 14. Either way, Sony's schedule for the new Xperia is rumored to be released on February at the Mobile World Congress in Spain. A release this month or March would make sense for the company.
If you're still undecided as to which VR system to go for, here's a crude breakdown:
- In terms of price, we only have speculations at this point which prices the PSVR at around the same as a new console ($300 USD) and the Oculus Rift at around $300-$500 USD.
- The PSVR is compatible with your PS4 while the Oculus Rift will be launched from your PC.
- In terms of game library, the PSVR has a lot of promising games available and in development while the Oculus Rift has Steam (and Valve) as a source.
- Both have new controllers specifically made for the VR experience.
It's clear that 2016 will be an exciting time for VR and both the Oculus Rift and PSVR are much awaited by fans. Needless to say, we'll have both if we can.
