Due to the growing popularity of the mobile gaming in the industry, it will be unlikely for a PlayStation Vita successor to be developed, at least not for now, as clarified by SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida. The executive said that with the current boom of mobile gaming, a room for a new portable handheld device is very slim.
During the Q&A at the EGX 2015, SCE Worldwide Studios' executive acknowledged the question as a tough one and went on to say that because all people have mobile phones, the access for mobile gaming is too easy, not to mention that most of the mobile games are free. This was his response with regards to the possible next generation PlayStation Vita.
Yoshida went on and said that he is a big fan of the Sony handheld device and they have poured in tons of time and effort in developing the PlayStation Vita. He also said that mobile's touch base gameplay is way different from a handheld portable gaming device, which needs buttons and sticks to play. Nonetheless, he is very hopeful that a new project will be developed in the future, considering that the gaming industry will keep the portable handheld gaming device alive in the next couple years.
Sony, on the other hand, is trying to scale up the PlayStation Vita these past few years, but the Japan consumer electronics giant is too hesitant to invest huge resources with the fear of setbacks. Since it was released, the most notable change or update in the device is when Sony formally announced the PlayStation Vita for the North America region in a different shade. Sony is set to release a limited Aqua Blue model of the handheld device this November.
However, the different shade might bump the sale of the PlayStation Vita a bit but will definitely not tip the scale. Experts and fans around the globe is more excited to see more titles for the handheld device which Sony failed to address in years.
