The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York has announced the first inductees of the World Video Game Hall of Fame. The museum is an interactive and collection-based institution of learning that specializes in the history and exploration of play. In 2009, the museum expanded its already vast collection of toys into electronic games and currently has a total of 100,000 square feet of exhibitions.
A total of six games was added to the inaugural class of the World Video Game Hall of Fame: Doom, Pac-Man, Pong, Super Mario Bros., Tetris and World of Warcraft. The museum will be accepting nominations for the hall of fame until March 31, 2016 through their website. The games were chosen based on whether the game achieved iconic status, longevity, geographical reach and influence. Some of the nominated finalists who didn't make it include Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokemon, The Sims, FIFA, Angry Birds, The Legend of Zelda, Space Invaders and Oregon Trail.
While some of the game genres were not properly represented, The Strong National Museum of Play does offer a summary about the six games when you click through them. The details on each page justify its nomination and induction. If you have other titles you'd like to nominate, we'd love to hear from you!
