Lyrid Meteor Shower Peaking: How And Where To Watch Live Sky Event On April 22 [VIDEO]

When, Where And How To Watch This Week's Lyrid Meteor Shower

The annual Lyrid meteor shower will be visible this week, with the best viewing days set for April 22 and 23.

Kerbal Space Program's Full Launch Is Finally Arriving Next Week

The meteor shower is occurring from April 16 to 25, but dawn of the next two days are the best times to see the event clearly, according to online observatory Slooh (via TIME).

How can you watch the event yourself? In person is always in option if you're ready at the right time, though the best viewing will be in Europe. Everyone should be able to catch at least some of the natural display before dawn, and you don't need any equipment. As long as you're facing a dark night sky there should be a view, but there are other alternatives as well.

Slooh will be hosting a livestream of the event from the Canary Islands starting at 8 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, April 22. This year in particular be good viewing for the Lyrid shower due to a full moon.

"This year the moon will be a waxing crescent only 1/15th the brightness of a full moon, and it will set early, allowing excellent dark sky conditions for this shower," said Slooh astronomer Bob Berman.

NASA has coverage of last year's Lyrid meteor shower here--check it out for an idea of what you could see this week. It's not quite the same thing as seeing it in person, so try to get out there early the next two days and see what your views are like.
