Celebrate the Fourth of July with Assassin's Creed 3

Just in time to celebrate the 4th of July, a new trailer has been released for Assassin's Creed 3. While the trailer itself doesn't show off anything new, it does help set the mood for the game, showing some of the huge battles that we can expect to see in the event that led to the birth of the nation, the American Revolution. We get a view of the battles on not only land, but sea as well.

All those soliders you see in the trailer, comes courtesy of a new version of the game's Anvil engine, which will also allow for seasonal changes. The landscape will be warm and open in the summer, but covered in snow during winter, which subsequently affects gameplay. In winter, soldiers will move more slowly and stumble about in the snow, and lakes and rivers will freeze over, allowing Connor access to new areas.

Assassin's Creed 3 introduces a new protagonist to the series, that of Connor Kenway. Another of Desmond's ancestors, Conor was born to a British father and a Mohwak mother.

Just as Ezio met with famed figures on the Renaissance like da Vinci and Machiavelli, so too will Connor meet with famous historical figures of the American Revolution. Among them will be George Washington, Paul Revere, Benjamin Franklin, and Samuel Adams. Armed with the infamous hidden blade, Connor adds a litany of other weapons to his arsenal: tomahawk, bow and arrow, rope darts, flint lock pistol, etc.

As shown in the trailer, Connor will not only engage in battles on land, but sea as well. Creative Director Alex Hutchinson has said that there will be at least one assassination mission in the game that will require players to use a ships cannons to take down enemy ships. In addition, you'll also be able to sail free for well over a three hour tour. And open world enthusiasts should be glad to know that the sailing is not on rails. That is, you'll be able to steer your ship wherever you like.

Assassin's Creed 3 is set for release on October 30, 2012.
