'Deadwood: The Forgotten Curse' Kickstarter: Adventure Game Mixes Thrill Of 'Zelda' With Gameplay Of 'Don't Starve'

Kickstart My Art: Deadwood - The Forgotten Curse Mixes Thrill Of 'Zelda' With Gameplay Of 'Don't Starve'

Steamroller Studios, a new indie studio comprised of industry professionals has just begun the Kickstarter campaign for its debut title, Deadwood: The Forgotten Curse, a new hybrid Zelda meets Don't Starve, tossed in with a little Tim Burton for good measure.

More Like Project DELAYED, Right? Project CARS Delayed Again

And if that doesn't get you interested, maybe you should stop reading right now. Deadwood - sadly unrelated to the HBO series - is an adventure game. By day you play a wooden boy named Lathe, traveling the countryside picking up supplies and having adventures with your best friend and companion, Roguard, a giant rock monster. By night, the zombies come. Well, the zombie trees - the titular Deadwood - come. It's up to you to build defenses to protect your now slumbering companion.

Though why the rock monster - who seems like he'd be ideally suited for battling undead trees - is sleeping is currently unknown. But to the Kickstarter video's credit, I really, really want to know why.

Everything about the game, from the design to the music, is quirky, accessible and fun. The team over at Steamroller is well on the way to getting the game out - they expect it to be ready to go next year - but any help would be certainly appreciated. They lack the big name recognition of Schafer, Tudyk, Fillion, and other insta-success stories via crowdfunding, but that doesn't mean their goal is any less worthy. If anything, it just means they have to show you more just to get off the ground.

"Deadwood still requires attention to story, design, modeling, programming, character animation, sound design, effects, and with the stretch goals, possibly multi player and more. Also keep in mind that as the budget grows the game will grow too."

Check out the detail involved in the creative process by way of their production diaries, or just head over to the official Kickstarter page to back it.
