The golden Mario amiibo figure we covered recently has now been officially announced by Nintendo.
PSN Spring Fever Sale Will Bring Discounts To New PS4 Games For 2 Months
The leaked details appear to be exactly on the money, as the press release reveals the Super Mario amiibo--Gold Edition will be coming exclusively to U.S. Walmart locations on March 20. It will launch alongside Mario Party 10 in 3,000 retail stores for $12.96.
Amiibo figures can interact with the Wii U Gamepad and the New Nintendo 3DS XL using NFC (near field communication) technology to create and save digital characters and data related to certain games. For example, Mario Party 10 features a new amiibo Party mode that players can only access by tapping their figures on the Wii U GamePad controller to customize them and bring them into the game as board pieces.

The figure is the same as the other Super Mario Bros figure available March 20 aside from the special gold color, a first for new editions of characters so far. Amiibo figures have been very successful so far for Nintendo, moving nearly 6 million units in the last two months of 2014. Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS are compatible with amiibos as well, and more titles will offer the feature in the future. Only the New Nintendo 3DS XL has NFC capabilities--older 3DS models and the 2DS unfortunately don't work with the figures.
