Star Trek Online is celebrating five years of boldly going where no one has gone before.

In honor of the big milestone, the anniversary event will once again be returning to the galaxy beginning Thursday, January 29 and running until February 26.
The limited-time event will add much needed game improvements and tweaks, including "a revamped Romulan story arc, new secondary deflector items and updates for the bridge officer training system." It will also contain a brand new storyline featuring Star Voyager's Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) and the greatest retcon in human history, Star Trek The Next Generation's Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby).

Several prizes are being awarded to players at specific times before the event, including the Motion Pictures costume pack - available from today until noon tomorrow. Check in at the C Store each day until Thursday for the day's special prize.
Any MMO that can last for five years and still churn out updates (12 in total) and expansions (2) must be doing something right. Cryptic and Perfect World clearly have a passion for the franchise, and the trekkers (or trekkies) of the world are more than happy to play along. Who doesn't want to be a Starship captain?
