One of the coolest things about the show is that it gives some insight into what goes into designing a custom sword. It's not exactly just slapping a bunch of cool stuff together and hoping for the best, Irish Mike spends some time really thinking over the design to give it personality and functionality.
The Whale Sword is no exception. After being stuck with the design, his daughter helps him by pointing out the obvious. She notes that the edge of the harpoon does in a way sort of look like a sword.

After that, it's off to the races for the swordsmith.
Based on the shape of the harpoon, Irish Mike designs a wicked whale inspired sword. It's clear that a great deal of research went into the project up into naming it after a well-known sea monster.
It looks like making this sword might call for all hands on deck as there are many intricate parts to the huge sword. The harpoon shaped blade will also have whale markings fashioned into it giving it the look and feel of an actual sea monster. The handle will be an old anchor to complete the nautical theme.
