The Original Strife: Veteran Edition Steam Launch Proves That The 90s Are Alive And Well; Classic Shooter Gets An Upgrade

Everything old is new again. Entertainment works in roughly 15 to 20 year cycles. With the advent of new technology, the gamers of the Clinton administration now have the keys to the kingdom and are hard at work recreating their formative years for the next generation. Today, Night Dive Studios announced the release of The Original Strife: Veteran Edition, an updated version of the 1996 classic, Strife: Quest For The Sigil.

Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition Is Out On iPhone Next Week Just In Time For Christmas

Strife came out during the early days of the First Person Role Playing Games, alongside the likes of System Shock. The Original Strife: Veteran Edition takes players to a dystopic future “where a religious brotherhood called The Order rules supreme.” Staring down an army of cyborgs, players have to fetch-quest their way across a barren hellscape to assemble the pieces of a mysterious artifact known as The Sigil, which may be the only key to defeating the leaders of The Order named The Programmer, The Bishop, and The Loremaster and the enigmatic being called The Entity. Basically, it’s Destiny. Look at those vague names!

Like I said, everything old is new again. At least they had the 90s to blame for their utter lack of creativity in naming conventions. What’s your excuse Bungie?

The game utilized the original DOOM engine and was developed for DOS. Yes, DOS. DOS forever! I only turned to Windows because I was forced to. Original Strife is now fully compatible with Windows and Mac, and has received enhanced graphics and sound effects.

The game comes with full Steam Achievements and Trading Cards, as well as a new multiplayer mode "Capture the Chalice" that was planned but never implemented into the original game.

Night Dive Studios has made a career in restoring old games for modern processors. They've been responsible for the updates to System Shock 2, The 11th Hour, The 7th Guest, and the classic I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.

The game is available right now via Steam and from Night Dive studios’ official website. Watch the trailer below for some 18 year-old vintage action.
