Destiny The Dark Below Expansion Allows You To Exchange Exotic Gear For Upgraded Versions, Other Gameplay Details Revealed

The recent Destiny patch changed the way exotic weapons are upgraded fairly dramatically, which was partially in preparation for the release of the first expansion, The Dark Below.

Following a trip to Bungie to play the coming release, Game Informer is able to further reveal changes to the exotics system and other aspects of the game. A major addition is the ability to upgrade your pre-existing exotic items to keep them relevant in the face of The Dark Below's new gear.

To do this, you'll need to visit the game's weekend vendor, Xur, who will have a new option to upgrade some exotic gear each week. If he's offering the item you have for upgrade that week, you must exchange your current version--whether its fully, partially, or not at all upgraded--to receive the new one. You'll also need an exotic shard, a new currency type added in the recent patch. Xur sells these for seven Strange Coins, and you can acquire them by breaking down other unwanted exotics. Finally, it will also cost a large sum of money (7,000 glimmer at GI's last playthrough) to seal the deal and receive your upgraded item with increased attack or defense.

The upgrades on your weapon will reset, which is likely one of the reasons Bungie removed the need for Ascendant Materials for exotic upgrades in the patch. Acquiring them is slow, and if you needed to collect them multiple times for one item, upgrades would take ages. With this new system, exotic gear won't lag behind and become irrelevant like some legendary items, making it nearly essential to have the cap of one armor piece and one weapon as part of your arsenal.

GI also explains that The Dark Below attempts to address criticism of the game's narrative with a more coherent storyline. New character Eris Morn, as reported earlier, is both part of the story and a new Tower quest-giver, and will play a central role. Head over to GI's full report to see a bit more about how Eris will be involved in The Dark Below and other additions.
