In news of movies returning from the abyss, Fox has greenlit a sequel to the much loved Independence Day. Everyone who grew up in 90s will remember the BBQ (and world) ruining aliens from the original film not to mention young Will Smith, fresh off from being the Fresh Prince. Production starts in May with the current release date of June 24, 2016. This is not a drill or a terrible rumor, Independence Day is returning.
Netflix to Add New Streaming Titles in December; Dropping Cult Classics
According to Deadline, Smith's wise cracking fighter pilot will not be returning for this film. Because he's too busy giving us hits such as After Earth. Even without the main star of the first, the film is set for go with the script already written. Casting has not begun yet but should take place soon. No word on other costars from the film so there may still be some familiar faces for long time fans.
New Star Wars Trailer, Finally an Official Look
The question is of course, what will this film be about? The good guys won in the first one. Do the aliens come back for revenge? Is it about cleaning up the planet and fighting ground troops deployed after the mother ship crashed? Without Smith, what kind of movie are we looking at? Apparently writers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin thought ahead to a future without the star and drafted up two very different stories, one in a perfect world where Smith still remained and one in which he didn't. July 4, 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the original 1996 blockbuster.
