Assassin's Creed Rogue, better known as this year's Assassin's Creed game that doesn't include horrifying graphical glitches, brings back the naval gameplay that everyone loved in Black Flag. Rogue even maintained Black Flag's Legendary Ship side missions, epic battles where you pit your own ship against incredibly powerful naval enemies for a generous gold reward.
Assassin's Creed Unity Is Broken, So Ubisoft Will Be Handing Out Free DLC
The final Legendary Battle in Rogue is a tricky one. Even for sailors with fully upgraded ships, the Storm Fortress – your behemoth of an opponent in the final Legendary Battle – can be a tough ship to sink. Its powerful mortars both damage you from long distance and set the sea on fire, restricting movement. Its broadside cannons fire several times in quick succession and will, given the opportunity, leave you hanging onto life after just one volley.
It's not an easy battle, but it can be won. Here are a few tips to get you started in this final sea battle.
Patch 3 For Assassin's Creed Unity Has Started Rolling Out
First, make sure you enter the battle with full health and full ammo. It seems basic, but nothing hurts worse than going into the battle and realizing that you only have three mortar rounds to use. If you end up losing the battle, you'll respawn at the beginning of the battle with all of the supplies you had originally. So fully equipping yourself up once will set you up for as many tries as you need to take.
Second, use your ship's charge ability to navigate around the water; it's not just for offensive purposes. All upgraded rams come with this charge ability that can be activated by aiming out the front of your ship and tapping the X or A button, depending on the console. Using a charge lets you gain a burst of speed to help you get where you need to be quickly, no matter which direction the wind is blowing. If you find yourself staring down the Storm Fortress' broadside or on the receiving end of a mortar volley, activate your charge and get out of the way as quickly as possible.
Perhaps the most important tip in this final sea battle is to know the Storm Fortress' critical blind spot. If you can position yourself directly behind the enemy ship, you're untouchable. You're out of range of the ship's broadside cannons, and it won't fire a mortar if you don't drift too far away. Once you're safely behind the Storm Fortress, slowly chip away at its health with whatever you can use: mortars, broadsides, explosive shot and rams.
Positioning is key in this battle. Remember that slowing down your ship lets you make sharp turns much more easily. Also take care to preserve your health as much as possible. You'll find out once you hit the Storm Fortress enough that it's not your only opponent in this battle. Don't worry too much about the other ships that come in. Their defenses are mediocre, and if left alone, they'll sometimes start to damage each other instead of you while you take them out from a distance with mortars. Still, you should know that the battle isn't quite over once you sink the kingpin.
Assassin's Creed Rogue is available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A PC version has been confirmed for 2015.
