Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is the second MMO to fall victim to a DDOS attack in as many weeks.

Square is reporting that "currently we are experiencing DDoS attacks from an anonymous third-party targeting the FINAL FANTASY XIV game servers on the NA/EU data center."
DDOS attacks are essentially the Zerg rush of computer hacking. Compromised computers, originating from two or more host machines, flood a specified server, in this case FF XIV and hope to crash it or slow it down so much to the point of uselessness. The reasons are unknown, it may be an attempt to access user information or, more than likely, simply being an online nuisance.

Square Enix reassures that no personal information is under assault. "However with the attack we are currently experiencing, only a massive number of access attempts are being made to the server where both character data and personal information of our customers are not in danger of being exposed."
The World of Warcraft servers were hit with a DDOS attack shortly after the launch of Warlords of Draenor last week. The assault forced Blizzard to take down the European server for maintenance and is still affecting higher population realms on the game. As such, Blizzard has offered all active accounts five additional days of game time to make up for it.
Perhaps that is ultimately the end goal: talented and bored people looking for something for nothing.
The FF XIV blog post continues. "Our technical staff is taking every possible measure to address this issue but the attack is still continuing to take place by changing their methods at every moment. We will continue to monitor and work on recovery from every possible angle."
No timetable can be given due to the nature of the attacks. Hopefully the servers will be up soon.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is also getting a new incremental patch, due out soon. Read the full notes here.
