Apple Releases OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 Update, Increasing Wi-Fi Performance On Mac; Also Releases iOS 8.1.1 Update

Apple Gets Software Updates Out For Both iOS And OS X Yosemite

Mac users have two updates to look forward to today. The first is a small bug fix for iOS 8.1. The other is the first post-launch update for OS X Yosemite that should help Mac users who've been struggling with Wi-Fi.

Of the two updates, the one for OS X is the more substantive. The iOS 8.1.1 update includes a handful of bug fixes and stability updates, but it mostly just improves how the operating system runs on Apple's older mobile devices. iOS 8 was available to all devices that were able to run iOS 7, with the notable exception of the original iPhone 4.

The OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 update, however, includes a number of fixes, one of which being a patch that should increase the Wi-Fi reliability of Mac desktops and laptops running Yosemite. There were also various issues from the original Yosemite rollout that are being fixed with the update. Among these previous issues were the Mail app not being able to send mail through certain email providers, some problems regarding the operating system's Notification Center and a problem with the Mac App Store displaying certain updates. The full fix list can be found over here.

Mobile Apple users can download the iOS 8.1.1 update by tapping the Settings icon and choosing "System Update" from the menu. Mac owners will be able to find the OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 update in the Mac App Store. As always, users are encouraged to back up their data before installing either update.
