Wii U System Update 5.3.0 Patch Notes: Update Adds Amiibo Support, Allows Registration And Reset Of Amiibo Figures

The Wii U's 5.3.0 Update Is Live And Adds In The System's Amiibo Settings

With the imminent release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, a game that will heavily incorporate support for Nintendo's new Amiibo line of figurines, the Wii U itself is also getting support for the little figures with the 5.3.0 software update, live now.

Super Smash Bros. Gets A Balance Patch On 3DS

The new system update is all about getting Amiibo support out to Wii U systems. It adds a menu for Amiibo Settings in the console's System Settings page. The new interface isn't all that complicated, consisting of only three items. The first item allows users to register their Amiibos to their specific Miis, which is a pretty painless process. All users need to do after selecting that option is place their Amiibo on the console's GamePad, assign it a user and a nickname, and place the figure on the GamePad again so the system can write the new data into the figurine's memory.

The other two options are about erasing an Amiibo's game data and completely resetting an Amiibo. Erasing an Amiibo's game data will reset its level in Smash Bros., for instance, but completely resetting an Amiibo means deleting its registered user and nickname, which is useful when you're looking to sell an Amiibo.

In either case, the process is similar to registering a figure. Place the figure on the GamePad so the system can identify the specific figurine, select what you want to do with it and replace the Amiibo on the GamePad so the system can write the new information into the figurine's memory.

Other than Amiibo support, the 5.3.0 system doesn't do much. The only other items listed in the patch notes are miscellaneous stability upgrades.
