StarCraft 2 Legacy Of The Void Details Announced At Blizzcon 2014: Standalone Expansion Introduces New Co-Op Multiplayer Modes [VIDEO]

Been A Long Time Coming: StarCraft II: Legacy Of The Void Details Released At Blizzcon 2014!

After four years, StarCraft II is one step further to completion. Blizzard unveiled a wealth of details regarding the third and final chapter in the war for the Koprulu sector at BlizzCon yesterday: StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.

Warcraft Movie Full Cast List Announced!

The anticipated and delayed expansion will put you in command of the mysterious and powerful Protoss forces as you try to hold back the darkness of the Xel'Naga, the race that created us all. Control Dark Templar Zeratul and the noble Artanis. The fates of Terran hero Jim Raynor and Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades, also hang in the balance.

"Legacy of the Void will deliver the quintessential StarCraft II experience," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "The new single-player campaign will wrap up the massive story, and we're excited to share new game modes that will open up different ways to play the game and additional units that will expand the rich strategic depth of StarCraft II multiplayer."

Hearthstone's Newest Expansion Is Goblins vs Gnomes

And what modes they are! Blizzard in general, and StarCraft in particular, have always innovated new and fun ways to play the game. That creativity looks to continue with Void.

Archon Mode, a competitive multiplayer mode unveiled at BlizzCon, will change how the game is played. In Archon Mode, two players share control over a single base and units as they take on an enemy duo in multiplayer action. By sharing the responsibility of commanding troops and managing resources, players can focus on their own areas of the battle and execute more intricate strategies. For instance, I am very good at base building, but I am terrible at offense. Now I don't have to be all things at once. Think of the new team tournaments that could happen with this new mode.

Allied Commanders is another gameplay mode new to StarCraft II. In this objective-based, fuly cooperative experience, players can team up and take on the roles of powerful commanders from the StarCraft saga. Each commander offers unique abilities and upgrades and bestows special bonuses on their armies. Players are able to battle through a series of special scenarios together, leveling up their commanders' capabilities as they progress.

Along with the new modes, multiplayer games will also see new units and functionality. The Zerg forces, after what I can only assume was much outcry, are finally getting the Lurkers back. (I hate those spiny, stealthy bastards.) Protoss forces will add a new unit called the Disruptor; you can guess what that is good at. Meanwhile, Terrans have picked up a few tricks of their own and can now upgrade their Battlecruisers to jump anywhere on the map. Many more were shown at Blizzcon.

Legacy of the Void will not require you to own either Wings of Liberty or Heart of the Swarm to play! Awesome.

As with many things Blizzard, if you do not announce a release date, no one can criticize you when you fail to make it. There's no word on when Legacy of the Void will come out, but since 2015 marks the five year anniversary of Wings of Liberty, it seems a likely candidate.
