Cook's sexuality wasn't necessarily a huge secret. According to Cook himself, many of the people he works with at Apple knew that he was gay. Cook values his personal privacy, however, and hadn't publicly mentioned anything about his sexuality before.

"While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven't publicly acknowledged it either, until now," Cook wrote. "So let me be clear: I'm proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me."

According to the statement, Cook decided to publicly comment on the matter to, on a larger scale, better help raise awareness and support for the continuing movements for equality regarding sexual orientation. On a smaller scale, he wrote that he also wants to offer people still struggling with their own identity a positive example of a public gay figure, especially one as central to the corporate world as himself.

"I don't consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I've benefited from the sacrifice of others." Cook wrote. "So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it's worth the trade-off with my own privacy."
