'Draw Something' Player Cheats May Hurt Zynga's Pockets

Zynga's highly popular "Draw Something" app faced issues of Twitter scams in the past couple weeks and currently is dealing with online gameplay cheating among players.

Based on reports from The LA Times, anonymous Draw Something players are scribbling out words rather than drawing out the answer.  Users have also discovered ways to avoid paying for new words in the app.

A player is first presented with three words to choose from before drawing. To gain an advantage over opponents, users have the opportunity to pay and get a new set of words.  Users are force-quitting the app in order to re open the game and receive a new set without paying.

The text scribbling cheat may be more of a headache for players as the user free-words loophole may be more of a revenue concern for Zynga.

In an interview with LA Times, OMGPOP's Chief Executive Dan Porter described that the text writing cheat dilemma occurs when users choose to play against strangers.

"Most of the writing out comes in random matches, with people you don't know," he said. "When you play with your friends there is less reason to write out a word because it defeats the purpose of playing - friendship is not about making things less fun for your friends."

Anonymous players were reported to have written out words to the answer or heavily relied on obvious keywords rather than sketching to acheive the answer.

The issue may have been greatly reduced as the game went mobile, allowing users to connect and play directly with friends.  Currently players cannot be flagged or blocked, so users are advised to simply avoid answering or leave the match.
